Witch Prophet is a queer, Ethiopian/Eritrean, singer-songwriter, and the Co-CEO of Heart Lake Records. She provides her fans with a soundscape of vocal layers, loops, raps, and harmonies on a bed of hip-hop, jazz, and soul-inspired beats. Think Erykah Badu meets Lauryn Hill meets Portishead. She finds depth and connection in creating music as a portal for self-growth and discovery, as she navigates and better understands her cultural and queer identity.
DJ Shub, the Godfather of PowWowStep now brings a dynamic live show of his critically acclaimed, chart topping electronic Indigenous album “War Club”. War Club Live is a celebration of Indigenous music and culture, featuring special guests, visuals and Indigenous dancers in full regalia. Surrey-based Asad Khan (aka Khanvict) is an escape artist. His love for lush strings, cinematic swells, and a West Coast bass music punch instantly transport the listener – conjuring visions of desert expanses and dense jungle paradises. His most recent release, an official remix of AR Rahman’s ‘Tere Bina’ on Sony Music India, sees him bring the work of his favorite composer into the studio (and forests!) of present day Vancouver through deft sound design and a reimagining of arrangement and melody. The video was streamed 1 million times in the first 2 weeks.
Asad immigrated to Canada from Pakistan with his family at the age of 13. And in many ways his music career to date echoes the story of his life. Although trained as an engineer, Asad left his career in his mid 20s to pursue his passion for music. The last several years for Asad have been a journey of self-discovery – and an escape from xpectations. Expectations of his community, his family, and ultimately himself.
This year has been a big year for Khanvict, hitting his first million streams on Spotify. His recent release, the politically charged ’Closer’, has racked up 3 Million plays on YouTube, seen him gain 50K subscribers on the platform, and garnered global press from Rolling Stone to Times of India to The Hindu. The short film supporting the song was a collaboration involving filmmaker Anjali Nayar, model / activist Seema Hari and a hauntingly beautiful exploration of issues of colorism, casteism and misogyny in South Asian culture. Recent singles have received support from Bobby Friction (BBC), Spotify, and Sony Music India.
A line up of hip-hop talent from across Canada.
An artist well known for her dynamic flows, aggressive stage presence and elaborate story-telling, Lex Leosis is loud, opinionated, constantly fighting for what she believes in and hungry to make something of her family name. She’s got an attack in her flow, juxtaposed with a finesse in her lyricism and a hunger in her vocal tone. Her family gave her traditions, Toronto shaped her, and California helped form her sound. Growing up in the West End of Toronto with a single mother who worked around the clock taught her discipline, hard work and survival. It gave Lex the energy to perfect her craft, grow her career and exchange stories with artists from all over the world.
Ndidi Cascade is a Vancouver-born-and-based hip-hop artist who is of Nigerian/Italian/Irish heritage. A songwriter, vocalist, educator, facilitator and curator, Ndidi has showcased her music, from classrooms to stadiums globally, opening for mega-talents such as Wu-Tang Clan & Femi Kuti. Ndidi Cascade facilitates youth empowerment workshops that use hip-hop as a medium for healthy self-expression; she is also a cultural curator for the Ethós Lab youth empowerment organization. Ndidi Cascade tours the festival and school circuits both as a solo artist, and with her collaborative bands including Metaphor & Mad Riddim.
Anishinaabe MC/Singer/Songwriter Leonard Sumner’s storytelling flows directly from the shores of Little Saskatchewan First Nation, located in the heart of the Interlake of Manitoba.
Sumner’s self-determined sound is evidence of his ability to simultaneously occupy landscapes of multiple musical genres including; Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, Country, and Rhythm and Blues.
With every vibration of the strings on his guitar, Leonard rattles the dust off truths that have been buried for far too long. On stage he poetically sings awake the consciousness of audiences may have been unaware of their slumber.
In this era of unsettling history and healing wounds of the past, Sumner’s music is an expression of medicine that walks the line between fortitude and fragility.
Punk rock fans look no further with two legendary acts not to be missed.
Kitty & The Rooster is a rock n’ roll duo from Vancouver featuring Jodie Ponto on the stand-up cocktail drumkit and Noah Walker on electric guitar. They are known for their surf-tastic hooks, clever lyrics, and ridiculously fun shows.
Kitty & The Rooster has toured all across Canada, played a cluck-ton of festivals including Vancouver Folk Fest, opened for Shannon & The Clams, and released an album called One Gig Hard Drive. New album coming soon!
Destruction and melody, acid wit and bruising vocals-this is the Pack A.D. Singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller have made a sound so gigantic, so fierce and raw and empowering, that it’s easy to forget there are just two people behind this brilliant, carefully constructed havoc. Shredding and pounding their way through every song, the Pack A.D. swallows you whole inside their fearless Franken-blend of heavy psychpop/garage-rock. Their lyrics are wild nests, human and complex: darkly funny disclosures about depression; indictments of digital excess; grief-stricken fire bombs; sly crusades against stupidity.
A night of RnB, blues and soul.
Ndidi Onukwulu known as Ndidi O is a two time Juno nominated and WCMA blues artist of the year that has to date released five albums under her solo moniker and multiple singles as part of her trip hop duo BOGA. She has toured nationally and internationally playing festivals and concert halls. Her songs have been featured in numerous television programs and commercial campaigns such as for GAP, Orange is the New Black, CW’s The Flash, Hulu’s Cloak & Dagger and most recently Netflix’s “Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madame C.J Walker” starring Octavia Spencer. Hailing from the wilds of British Columbia she found her voice in the “open mic ‘” scene in New York, discovered her sound in the heart of Toronto’s blues and folk scene, fine tuned her live show across Europe and has now finally settled for the moment back on the West Coast. Ndidi O is working on new musical offerings from her solo project , her trip hop duo BOGA and her upcoming collaboration The Blue And Gold with multi-instrumental singer-songwriter Trish Klein.
DACEY (DAH-SEE) sets a new age storm on stage, with elements of various genres; Alternative R&B, Lo Fi Hip Hop, Neo-Soul, Indie, and Jazz, tied together with her creative edge. Influenced by unforgettable artists such as Amy Winehouse, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, SZA, and Anderson .Paak; DACEY makes their genre-defying mark, producing progressive melodic stories fit to any mood they seek with the crowd. Andrada’s hooky vibe continues to linger in the limelight as she and her band proceed to captivate the underground scene, starting right at her roots; in the heart of Vancouver.
